Dr Karen Read AM has been a principal in secondary schools since 2003 and has extensive experience in leading mostly low ICSEA schools. Her experience as a Principal/Deputy in a range of contexts provides essential breadth of experience to contribute to the directions of WASSEA and public education into the future. In particular, she is passionate about providing students in low ICSEA schools with a quality education and ensuring that all students have access to the best opportunities to support their success into the future. Her belief is that all students can succeed given the right environment and support.

In addition to school appointments, Karen has experience at a District level as a Principal Consultant and Director of Schools. She was also a Principal Advisor with the roll out of the SCFM working across the regions and gaining valuable insights into these schools’ unique challenges. Her current experience also includes advisory membership of: DoE’s International Education group; South Metro Regional VET team; and is a member of SCSA’s Principal’s Advisory group. Karen has also spent time at UWA lecturing in the Masters of School Leadership and Master of Teaching programs whilst also tutoring the Master of Education program at ECU.

Dr Read is a strong advocate for the work of WASSEA in advancing public secondary education having previously been on Executive and was integral to the development of the WASSEA declaration for Public Secondary School Education in Western Australia.
