Implementing a whole school approach to literacy in the secondary school

Presented by Fiona Walker, Principal Consultant Literacy, Department of Education WA

Cross curricular literacy in the secondary context is in the national spotlight like never before and feedback from Fiona’s presentation at the recent Australian Literacy Educators’ Association (ALEA) Conference 2019 confirms that WA is leading the way in this field. Fiona will present a compelling case for a whole school approach to literacy and provide a road map for successful implementation.

Participants will be led through the layers of the practical implementation model developed by the Secondary Literacy Educators’ Network in Western Australia and the literacy team of the Department of Education, Western Australia. These include what is important regarding leadership; effective pedagogy; the role of the literacy leader; the placement of disciplinary literacies; key literacy teaching practices for reading and writing; and SAER intervention. The presentation contains advice borne of experience and outlines identified reasons for failure.
